The exhibition brings together 27 flemish artists, who have been active
since the 60's, mainly since the period through 1975-1985. With their
appearance at the end of the 19th and the end of the 20th centuries, James
Ensor, Henri de Braekeeler, Rik de Vos and Edgar Tygat introduce a particular
exhibiting atmosphere, without aiming to question elements arising from
a story.
Each of the artists involved, except for a very few among them, are represented
by an assembly of works de premier plan (five works from Broodthaers,
9 from Jan Vercruysse, 5 from Luc Tymans forming a series of 18 photographs,
etc.) All these works have been borrowed from the collection of the Flemish
Community of Belgium.
These assemblies are presented in group-form, and are juxtaposed side
bu side in exhibition rooms, in terms of possible thematic similarities,
or purely visual, esthetic, spatial and material relations. A good example
would be the image of theatrality by Jan Fabre, having a dialogue with
sculpture-objects of Thierry De Cordier. The exhibition mounts a setting,
consisting of sensible, material and esthetic content of an assembly of
works.
Across different rooms throughout the show, numerous recurrent themes
emerge little by little: the artist, the art and the collection; the proximity
to humanity or geography; the domesticity or intimacy; the representation
and decoration, etc. Consequently, the tone of treatment is marked by
a sentiment diffused in a way one could qualify as consolation. Without
a doubt, art, itself could mean that consolation for an artist; one that
stops to dissimulate or construct alibis.
For any of the stated themes, could the particular character of their
treatment be qualified as specifically flemish, or representative of flemish
art ?
A communal sensibility, or rather relations of proximity placed in the
interior of the same linguistic space, geography and history which could
alone incarnate this supposed localism.
Perhaps, it would be convenient to design a situation without physical
frontiers, remarkable with its capacity for exchange, and a free setting....?
