Mario Milizia
«Continental Encore»
8 June – 7 September 1997

The Cafeteria of Le MAGASIN hosts a sound installation by the Italian artist Mario Milizia. The walls are covered, from floor to ceiling with mock-wood wallpaper, and a selection of 6 CDs creates the "sound track". These CDs are compilations of music tracks which we have all already heard, in waiting-rooms, in shopping malls, in lifts, and in sitcoms, together with disturbing sound manipulations, as in «Stayin' Alive», «Magma», and «Echoes». The latest «Continental Encore» CD was produced for this occasion, as well as the photo album placed on the tables, including manipulated images. By isolating and displacing visual and sound elements we are familiar with, Mario Milizia shows us the extent to which an «international life style» can be artificial and obsessive.

A publication accompanies the installation.

Mario Milizia was born in 1965 in Milan, where he lives and works. After obtaining a degree in graphic design in Florence, he studied Philosophy and Letters at the University of Pisa. He currently collaborates as a graphic designer with Ettore Sottsass.
