REOPENING / 20 YEARS OF
MAGASIN
On 21 January 2006, Le MAGASIN – Centre National d’Art
Contemporain de Grenoble is moving back into the building that has been
its home since its creation in 1986: the Halle Eiffel. Age had rendered
part of this former industrial building unfit for exhibitions, and so
in 2004 the City of Grenoble, its owner, undertook restoration work with
support from the State, the Regional Council of Rhône-Alpes, the
General Council of Isère and EU funding.
The glazed areas (roof and side windows), a total of some 1600 square metres,
and safety features, have all been replaced.
In the second phase, to start probably in 2007, restructuring work will be carried out under the supervision of an architect in order to adapt the building to contemporary developments in exhibition practices and, at the same time, to respond to the urban development around it (redevelopment of the Bouchayer-Viallet site), probably by creating an entrance along the side.

The Book :
MAGASIN 1986-2006
Le MAGASIN publishes with JRP Ringier editions (Zürich) a book on the
assessment of its activity since its opening in 1986.
The book reunites exhaustive documentation on the programming of the three successive directors, and chose to highlight certain projects, for the most part never published, of artists such as Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Robert Barry, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Joseph Beuys, Alighiero Boetti, Monica Bonvicini, Daniel Buren, Chen Zhen, Sylvie Fleury, Liam Gillick & Philippe Parreno, Jack Goldstein, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, le GRAV, Jim Isermann, Ilya Kabakov, Mike Kelley, Barbara Kruger, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Matt Mullican, Richard Prince, Thomas Ruff, Allen Ruppersberg, Jim Shaw, Philippe Thomas, Xavier Veilhan, Lawrence Weiner, etc.
Edited by Yves Aupetitallot, who wrote an essay, it is also composed of texts’ extracts by the invited curators: Paul Ardenne, Lionel Bovier, Laura Cottingham, Christine Macel, Paul McCarthy, Stéphanie Moisdon Trembley, Franck Perrin and Eric Troncy, already published by MAGASIN.
The publication is not only a reference book on contemporary art, but also a collection of critical texts on the evolution of the relationships between institutions and the artists, as well as on the role of Le Magasin in the domain of curatorial experimentation.
