Cross-stitches, thorns, chains and shared words bring to life a collective history, little-known but not forgotten, that has left its mark on the Grenoble area.
Curated by Céline Kopp assisted by Alexia Pierre and Noémie Pirus-Hassid.
Extension The exhibition has been extended until 17.09.2023.
Cindy Bannani, through embroidery workshops held regularly at the Magasin CNAC for over three months prior to this exhibition, is working to bring out the living memory of a movement that marked a turning point in the fight against racism in France. In 1983, the 'March for Equality and Against Racism' made a stop in Grenoble, where it gathered more participants before continuing across France to Paris, where it was welcomed by thousands of demonstrators. Cindy Bannani's approach to this major historical event is one of collective, intergenerational transmission, with oral tradition and know-how circulating.
Les 35 et les 99 965 autres (The 35 and the 99,965 others), the artist's first solo exhibition, is a reference to the 35 people who initiated the project and the collective mobilisation they engendered, reactivating the living memory of this march and its current issues. The artist is giving us the gift of these moments of sharing with the people of Grenoble and the surrounding area, and inviting us to continue this process in our everyday lives. Here, the gesture of embroidery repairs as much as it brings people together, and from there the sparks of a common struggle resurface.
Cindy Bannani was artist-in-residence at Magasin CNAC in Grenoble from November 2022 to March 2023. Prior to that, she was in residence at the Consulat, an independent cultural centre in Paris dedicated to the same research project.
