The first part of the fourth edition of the Festival des Gestes de la Recherche - conceived by Simone Frangi and Katia Schneller as part of the 'Artistic Hospitality and Visual Activism for a Diasporic and Post-Western Europe' Research Unit at the Ecole Supérieure d'Art et Design - Grenoble (ESAD) and organised with Melis Tezkan and Benjamin Seror - will be held on 29 and 30 November 2023 at the Magasin, Centre National d'Art Contemporain and the Ecole supérieure d'art et design de Grenoble.
The performative, audiovisual, sound and theoretical practices that this fourth edition of the Festival brings together rethink the notion of 'home' in the light of diasporic dynamics and the experiences of exile and colonial expropriation that have made up contemporary Europe. The Festival 2023 programme aims to challenge the traditional notion of 'home', proposing that it be perceived more, as this year's guest artist Rehema Chachage suggests, as an 'instinctive feeling'. As a conceptual and creative tool, it contributes to the search for genealogical traces that, through collaborative practices, can help us find 'kinship' links beyond geographies and territorial assignments.
The Festival des Gestes de la Recherche, which first three editions took place in November 2020, 2021 and 2022, provides an opportunity to produce knowledge and publicly share the research developed within the framework of the research unit, "Artistic Hospitality and Visual Activism: for a Diasporic and Post-Western Europe" (www.pratiquesdhospitalite.com). The Festival is an atypical format conceived in the context of an art school as a space for research in action, bringing together artists, theoreticians and curators, with the aim of weaving together research gestures articulating forms of expression and experiences that break down the hierarchy of relations between theory and artistic practice. The organisation of the Festival is also a crucial area of work for the students involved in the new Master's degree 'Holobionte. Visual practices, exhibitions and the new ecologies of art" in the Art Option at ESAD Grenoble (www.holobionte-grenoble.com).
The Festival des Gestes de la Recherche is organised by ESAD Grenoble-Valence in partnership with Le Magasin CNAC and with the support of the French Ministry of Culture.
